Verified ReviewerConcerns Regarding Discrimination and Privacy Violations of a Minor
My daughter was the only African American attending the Boys and Girls Club called Marion & John Anderson Youth Center located at 1980 E. Avenida De Las Flores, Thousand Oaks, California.
My child received a 5-day suspension based on one child's accusation. The accuser claimed my child said the N word while throwing trash away. My child denied the accusation and I was told there were no adults who heard anything. My child had never received a suspension before.
When I questioned the clubs director,
Caitlin S. I was originally told multiple children heard my daughter saying this word. This turned out to be false. A previous staff member told me the club uses the word multiple to manipulate parents.
I was also told protocol wasnt followed. 5 day suspensions are reserved for acts of violence. When I questioned the clubs director Caitlin she informed me the N word was being thrown around at the club by other kids. I asked why the only African American would be receiving the punishment.
Why not have a white child saying a racial slur receive a consequence? Why base a harsh punishment on the word of one student? Why was the word of another student taken over my child's word?
I removed my child from this club immediately based on racism concerns.
Later, I reached out to the CEO, Greg N. who contacted the club asking questions regarding the incident.
A week after I removed my child from this club and the same day the CEO contacted the Boys and Girls Club where my daughter previously attended, Caitlin contacted my childs middle school principal to let him know my child had been suspended. Caitlin did not let the principal know my child was no longer attending this club. Caitlin also told the principal of my childs school I had called her boss and gotten her into trouble.
I reached out to the CEO again asking why the need for gossip. The CEO told me he was leaving the position due to family matters and provided me with the Conejo areas director Leslie L.
This woman sent me an email that was filled with lies. I highlighted the lies and sent the email back to Leslie L. BTW the word multiple was used throughout the email Leslie L sent me. I then contacted the corporate office in Georgia and spoke with a man named Joe I.
He was going to look into my concerns regarding discrimination and child privacy violations. Joe assured me he would reach out to me and explain why the only African American child was treated differently. That was over a month ago.
Based on my experience the Boys and Girls Club located in Thousand Oaks, California I concluded they discriminated against my daughter and violated my childs privacy. I requested the staff members of this club receive training in racial sensitivity and for the clubs director Caitlin to stop gossiping about my minor child.
If the Boys and Girls Club has a Code of Ethics, perhaps the staff at Conejo needs a refresher course. G

Verified ReviewerBecause they’re very shady organization they are very prejudiced
staff member are careless and rude. You don't see no love nor respect for kids over there.
My son was bullied by a teen that was just always sneaking to the juniors area and staff member wouldn't do nothing!!! They actually dont seem to care. They ignore everything and if say something, the do it in a really vague way just to say something, but dont do crap! Field trips are limited, if u do a field trip for juniors or teens, is for juniors or teens, not for 40 of all juniors or 50 of all teens, it is just wrong!!!
kids dont have to be left out of anything. NO ONE THERE IS ON THE SAME PAGE, one person could say something, and another person would say something completely different. Happened to me a looot of times. There soooo many things I could say, so many things that happened, that I would never ever end.
If you love and care for your child, please please please, send him to another club. i MEAN, THE CONCEPT OF THE BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB IS GREAT, BUT IS ONE THING TO HAVE A VISION, A MISSION AND A DIFFERENT ONE TO ACTUALLY EXECUTE IT. And this club is a completely disaster!!! My son never came out with a smile from there, nor crying, it was just another day...
he would say, yes it was good, same as always, too many mean people, bullies and staff just dont care... HIS WORDS, AN 8 YRS OLD... if i ask what happened either he talked to me very sad but indiferent, like used to it and knowing that its always going to happened there, or he would be crying his eyes out, its heartbreaking!!!
I HATE THIS CLUB and staff member... ughhhh they just dont care about any kid, parent, or situtation.

Verified ReviewerChild Behavior
My son labeled as problem child and expelled due to his ADHD
My son had been in boys and girls club since kindergarten. He was doing great up until the start of his 2nd grade year. At that time his club location went through many staff over turns (not sure why) and many program changes more like a strict boarding school.
My son started getting bullied at 2 site locations. Each time he would ask staff for help but get ignored so he took it upon himself to fight back. Because he chose to fight for himself he got suspended several times. Then they started getting on his case more and more about small stupid petty stuff (sit still, dont tap your pencil--he was being rude when we questioned him about something) so i had him moved to a different site location.
Things were going great but then 2 months at the new site he starts getting bullied again...same damn thing. Staff doesnt help but this time his behavior was worse so the director expelled him from the program. It was the same director as his previous location. I honestly think the director had it out for him from the start...and there were several times where i tried to stand up for my son and tell the director she needs better staffing but she would always defend her staff members over my son and other students.
There seriously needs to be some huge changes to this club as a whole for the better not for the worse. Maybe my son getting terminated is a blessing in disguise after reading all of the reviews.

The staff there do not pay attention to students.
Boys And Girl's club
Boys and Girls Club in Largo FL 61st
I had signed my children up for the summer camp and they have been bullied and made fun off everyday my children do not want to join any activities now that they have had that horrifying experience at this location. The get beat up smacked upside the head and called all kinds of names the counselors do nothing about the matter and they seem to not just let it ride due to them being children.
In this day and age bullying should be taken seriously since so many young kids commit suicide cause they feel like why should I live if no-one cares. It would break my heart when I would hear them talk about it on their own.
I could hear how unhappy they were and how depressed they got. I wouldn't recommend this site to anyone that doesn't already know a person at the location since there is much favoritism going on.

There weren't other children. That was one of my points.
I was lied to by the staff which I later found out they use the word multiple as a way to manipulate the parents. I was told this by another staff member.
